Accessing the Internet
Be you can do much of anything with your iPad you must connect to a wireless network. Before you start be sure you know two things:
- The name of the network you would like to join
- The password to that network
- Touch the Settings button located at the bottom of the screen
- Look at the menu bar on the left had side of the screen. The second option on the menu should be Wi-Fi
- Touch Wi-Fi. Be sure that the button for Wi-Fi is on. If there is a white circle on a green background then Wi-Fi is on. If there is a white circle on a white background then Wi-Fi is off.
- Under Wi-Fi, the heading Choose a Network . . . should appear. Under this heading are all the available Wi-Fi networks in the area. Touch the name of the network that matches the network information you gathered earlier.
- If there is a closed padlock next to the network name, then a password will be required to log onto the network.
- The radiating signal symbol indicates how strong the network signal is. Networks with the most black stripes indicate the strongest signals. Signal strength can influenc how long it takes to load internet pages or download apps. It can also indicate how difficult it is to matintain a connection. A network with only one black stripe (or in this case a dot) could be very difficult to stay connected to.
- Touching the blue ! in the blue circle will give you more information about the network. If you have alread connected to a network but you don't want the device to connect automatically to this network then press this button and then press "Forget This Network". Other information about the network can be found here. This information may be useful when placing a service call regarding Internet problems
- Once you have found the name of the Wi-Fi network to which you would like to connect, touch the name and a page will appear that askes you to enter the passowrd for that network. Once you enter the password for the network then touch Join. If the work Join isn't turned blue, then you do not have a valid password. (P.S. if Join does turn blue this doesn't necessarily mean that you have entered the correct password)
- Once you touch join, your device should connect to the network and the network name should be listed above the Choose A Network heading and a blue check should to the left of the name, indicating that it is the network you are using.
- You should also see that the radiating signal appears at the top left of your device just to the right of the work iPad. This indicates that you are connected to a Wi-Fi network and it indicates the strength of the signal.
Set up an iTunes account
When you receive your iPad, the first thing that needs to be done is to sign up for and Apple ID and an iTunes account. Having these will allow you to download apps to your iPad. In order to set up an Apple ID follow the following steps:
- From the Home Screen, touch the Settings button located at the bottom of the screen, then touch iTunes and App Stores.
- If an Apple ID is already displayed at the top (it will say Apple ID: someusername@someemail.com), you will want to touch that Apple ID and then touch Sign Out from the pop up menu.
- Once you have signed out from the previous user, touch Create New Apple ID.
- Next, touch Store and select the country in which you are located.
- Touch Done and then touch Next.
- In on order to continue, agree to the Terms and Conditions and Privacy Policy by touching Agree on the bottom right of the page.
- When it appears, touch Agree again.
- Next, enter an email address and password and set up three security questions and answers. The email address you entered will be your new Apple ID. Enter your email address and touch Next. An optional "rescue email address" can be entered to prevent yourself from getting locked out of your account!
- You may already have an Apple ID, if this is the case then you will receive a prompt telling you that the email address you used is already associated with an Apple ID. If this is the case, touch Continue and then touch Use Existing Account.
- On the next screen you will need to enter a credit card. To choose the type of credit card, touch the one you want and the touch Done. Adding your credit card to your account allows you to make purchases off of the iTunes and the Apple App Store. Your card will not be charged until you purchase something.
- Once all the information for your credit card has been entered, touch Next.
- A screen will appear that says "Verify Your Account."
- Touch Done. An email verification will be sent to the email address you provided that verifies that your account is set up correctly.
- Once the email from Apple has arrived, open the email and touch Verify Now in order to activate your account.
- The link will take you to a secure page where you will enter you Apple ID and your password.
- Once you have entered this information touch Verify Address.

Setting up Guided Access
Activating Guided Access on your iPad is very important for many reasons. First, it keeps the user focused on the app that is being used and prevents the user from straying from the communication app to play a game or on the internet or to changing settings on the current app. Second, it restricts the user from gaining access to other apps that you might not want them to. For example, you use your iPad at work and allow students to trial your AAC apps but you don't want them to have access to your email or photos, by activating the Guided Access option, your students can still trial the app without accessing personal information. Lastly, if you are using an iPad that is provided to you by insurance or other agency, then that iPad can only be used as an AAC device and not as anything else to include email, internet, or even educational functions (insert link to regulation here). To find Guided Access:
- Touch the Settings button at the bottom of the home screen
- Select General
- Then Accessibility
- Guided Access can be found under "Learning" almost at the very end of the menu. From here you can:
- Turn Guided Access on or off simply by touching the white circle located to the right of Guided Access. A green background means that Guided Access is on, a white background means that Guided Access is off
- When Guided Access is turned on you can:
- Set a passcode prevents someone from leaving the set app
- Set how long the app can be used before it automatically shuts down
- Turn on Accessibility Shortcut
- Open the App that you want to be locked into
- Triple-click the Home button and a menu will appear
- Select Guided Access
- Bars will appear at the top and bottom of the screen that read "Cancel Guided Access Start" on top and "Hardware Buttons (options) Touch Time Limit (options)" Below
- Touching Cancel allows you to exit the Guided Access without activating it
- Touching Start initiates Guided Access with the current settings
- Touching Options below the "Hardware Buttons" allows you to select which buttons on the iPad will be active during the Guided Access session. To turn the buttons on or off touch the circle associated with the label, a green field means the button will be active while a white field means that the button will be inactive.
- Under "Touch" you can turn the ability to control the screen with touch on an off. This option is useful when a video is playing that you do not want the user to fast forward, rewind, or otherwise control.
- Touching Options under "Time Limit" opens up the controls to set the amount of time the app will be active.
- If there are specific parts of the screen that you do not want the user to access, such as the settings button, you can circle it by touching the screen with your finger and drawing a circle around the area that you do not want accessed. This will restrict at area of the screen from the user.
- After setting your restrictions, touch Start. You will be asked to set a passcode in order to exit Guided Access. Select 4 numbers that you will remember! Re-enter your 4 number to verify you passcode. Once the code has been verified, Guided Access for the app will start.
- To exit Guided Access triple click the home button and enter the passcode
- If you set up a time limit for the app and the time has expired a message will appear saying "Time Expired. A time limit of _______ has been set for Guided Access. Triple-click to enter the Guided Access passcode." Follow the directions to fully exit Guided Access.
